MUSIC VIDEO PROJECT: WRITING 1
MUSIC PRODUCTION CRITICAL EVALUATION
Remember, keep refering to your generic and audience research which should be on your blog and in your appendix.
Part 1 (due on Mon 29 Oct) should be about 1500 words in length and should consider the planning, shooting and editing to rough cut stage. You should make use of your blog as a reference point throughout! Where you refer to real examples for comparison, give web references and as much detail as possible e.g. artist/song and video director.
Introduction
Explain what task you did for the AS production and how this one differs from it.(e.g. thriller in iMovie, music video in Final Cut)
Part One
Explain briefly how the work came about and what the tasks were. (Talk about editing the phone call practice in the summer, analysing some real music vids and looking at student examples, , MySpace music range of choices, etc)
Which band/artist did you choose and why ? (give some positive reasons here)
How did you ‘pitch’ for them ? (summarise briefly)
Where did you get your ideas from ? cite actual examples as shown on your blog !
What tasks had to be done in the research and planning phase? How were these handled and what could have been done to improve them ? (talk about storyboarding, animatic, organising places, props, equipment, people)
Talk about any test footage or location pictures you shot. What did you learn from doing these tests and from the animatic ?
Write about the shoot. What went well/badly ? what could you have done differently ?
Consider your early editing and how you reached the rough cut stage. Outline this process and discuss decision-making you undertook.
What audience feedback did you get from the rough cut ? what still needs to be done ?
MUSIC VIDEO WRITING 2
Part Two
FULL DRAFT due Mon 12 Nov 9am. teacher feedback then revised final version of the whole 3000 words by Mon 26 Nov 9am (ABSOLUTE DEADLINE)
This section should be about 1500-2000 words (including about 500 for the last part on the industry)
What feedback did you get at the rough cut stage and how did you change things as a result ? Refer to what the class said, anything you got from youtube .
Analyse the images and editing in the finished music video, paying close attention to characters, performance, narrative (or absence thereof), mise-en-scene and the ways in which you have constructed the video to sell the song.
Make reference to theory, Vivienne Clark’s handout, Sven Carlsson, Goodwin's aspects of music video as discussed in the introductory work. Any other theorists you can find out for yourself will give you extra brownie points and make your work stand out.
Compare your video to the conventions of music video, referring to actual examples where possible.
How did the audience read your finished video ? make reference to comments from class and from Youtube. If you had a band what did your artist or talent think of the finished product.?
Comparison
Also compare with real videos by the artist (see what's on youtube or their MySpace).
Concluding section: the industry
Make reference to the process of making a video in the music biz as outlined by Lindy Heymann or Jake Wynne ( on Long road blog) Talk about the process from commissioning through to budgets, planning, shooting, editing and screening on TV. Use the video clips from the talks to help you !
Talk about the significance of MySpace and Youtube to the music industry. Use the articles on the blog and any others you find to help you. What impact is new media having on the business ? How does what you have done relate to that ?
With hindsight is there anything you would change about your product?

Work to do:
1. Summarise the main points of Sven Carlsson's essay and highlight the concepts you will use in your own project.
2. Find a video that is similar to the 'composition in blue', upload both of them and again, point out the relationship between the lyrics, music, narrative and/or concept.
3. Create a mood board to evoke the atmosphere/vibe you are going for.
4. Write up your ideas for your video, in terms of narrative and cinematography.
5. Most importantly GET FILMING you need to start editing next week.

Animatics
Your aim by the end of the week should be to finish your animatic. When you have edited it in time to the music you should then upload it to Youtube. You will have to sign up to it and follow the instructions.
When your animatic is uploaded you can then create a link in the normal way back to your own blog. Please email me via mac.com so I can have a look. You can visit each others and ask for audience feedback, you may even get some feedback from the youtube site.
When we come back in September you will then be reflecting on the effectiveness of this animatic and deciding which elements you are going to keep and which you may change for your actual footage.
If you have access to a video camera it would be a really good idea to film your footage over the summer when you have plenty of time and your 'talent' will not have so many demands on their time.
We will also be studying horror and sci- fi films as part of the film genre unit so if you are getting any DVDs out, choose one from those genres.

Work on going
Here is a list of things to do by Monday. We will be setting the cameras up on Monday for you to film your storyboard and create an animatic so a blank page will not do!
1. You must have at least 3 video textual analysis. Use the points on the sheet I gave you on Monday to help with this and link it to Goodwin's theory (6 points, link of lyrics/music to visuals, voyeurism, record company influence etc).
2. Download and annotate your lyrics. Pick out themes that you intend to use in your video, are you going to illustrate, amplify or contradict?
3. Sketch your storyboard. It doesnt have to be perfect, it may even change, it is simply to get an idea of your timings and the amount of footage you will eventually have to capture.

Pulp Videos
Have a look at these Pulp videos. They are quite 'post modern' in their approach in the way they draw attention to their form. The use of clapperboards and descriptions of edits, particularly in Babies ( the last one) are a way of revealing their techniques. They are also very simple and although the colours and lighting has obviously been saturated in the editing process, probably in After Effects, the actual shot types and narratives are very simple and something you could apsire to emulate ( copy, copy, copy!).
